Rob Meurs – In memoriam

Today headcoach Phil Martelli walked into our office at Saint Joseph’s University and asked if I was related to Rob Meurs, which was the first foreign coach he had ever met. Obviously I am not related, but it is not the first time that I’ve been asked.

Rob Meurs was a famous dutch basketball coach and scout. Among other things, he was one of the lecturers of the first edition of the FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate, for which I graduated in 2013 (see previous post). Tragically, he died in a car accident in 2010 coming from the famous U18 Albert Schweitzer tournament in Mannheim (Germany) towards the game Oostende-Luik in Belgium. I attended this tournament in 2012 and it gathers the most talented U18 teams from over the world, which results in being a real hotspot for talent scouters.

Rob Meurs was best known for his scouting. He was the first European scout to be hired by an NBA team (back in 1987). He would work for the Golden State Warriors, San Antonio Spurs and the New Jersey Nets. Rob played an important part in the influx of foreign players into both the NBA and the NCAA since the early 90’s of the last century.

Being an expert in scouting, he explains his vision about talent and recruitement in this article “How_to_Evaluate_Talent“, which can also be found on the coaching website of Fiba Europe. Very nice and useful reading!
