Why Spain has the best basketball blueprint 🎙️

Some facts of last months gathered together:
1) Spain won recently the World Cup 🏆 , while being ranked only 5th in the powerrankings up front (behind favourites like Serbia and the USA).
2) Spain became the European champion in the U16 and U18 age categories (and a silver medal in U20) 🥇🥇🥈
3) Rookie of the Year Luka Doncic moved to Madrid at the age of 13 (!) before becoming one of the most sensational rookies in the NBA of the last decade.
4) NBA champion Toronto had a significant Spanish charactre with key player Marc Gasol and Spanish NT coach Sergio Scariolo in the staff (whose fingerprints are all over the Raptors’s offensive and defensive playbook).

These successes are not an accident. Since 2009 I spread my love for Spanish basketball and I keep on calling it the best youth program in the world.

Last week I was invited on the podcast 🎙️ of ThisIsBasketball, where we had time to go deeper into it. I had the chance to talk about my current job in Valencia, the basketball culture here, player development, organization of the championship, some take-aways for coaches and decision-makers, …

Since I get so often questions about Spanish basketball, I want to share it with you. It’s 100% in English. You can listen to the podcast here:

That’s all for now, I’m out. The Euroleague champs of CSKA Moscow are in town here in Valencia and I can’t wait for tip-off of this Euroleague season!
